How to Use It (4-Week Plan)

Try one toolkit per week in short sessions, repeating activities as needed. Four weeks is a suggested introduction; each child’s progress and support needs will differ.
Parent and child practicing manners at home together

1

Week 1 — Polite Greetings

Start with greetings because they set the tone for everything. Use the role-play cards in familiar settings and celebrate a greeting the child chooses: words, a wave, sign, or a device message.

2

Week 2 — Table Manners

Choose one short practice before a meal using pretend food and safe, empty props. Repeat useful routines at a comfortable pace and offer reminders or support when needed.

3

Week 3 — Conversation Skills

Choose one comfortable conversation card in a familiar setting. Model a response, take short turns, and let the child pass or use their usual communication supports.

4

Week 4 — Respect for Adults

Practice a courteous reply, a safe direction, a respectful disagreement, or a personal boundary. Adults model the same respect and adjust the plan to the child.

Common Struggles Parents Face

“My child does fine at home but freezes when we’re at someone else’s house.”

A new setting may need different support. Rehearse with a familiar person, offer choices, and allow a pass or break. Do not assume the child’s response reflects their character.

“I tell them the same things every day and nothing sticks.”

Use one short script or activity and model it yourself. Repeat at a comfortable pace, check understanding, and offer practical help.

“I don’t know where to start — there’s so much to teach.”

Choose one situation that matters to your family. Start with one activity rather than using all four toolkits at once.

“My child is polite with me but rude with other adults.”

The Respect for Adults toolkit offers scripts and role-plays for courteous replies, questions, and boundaries. Check the child’s comfort, communication needs, and understanding before giving feedback.
