Manners Matter Now

“When it comes to table manners every child should know that the goal is to make meals pleasant and show respect for others. Teaching children these habits early sets them up for social success. The Table Manners Toolkit recommends focusing on a few key behaviours and practising them consistently.”

table manners every child should know

1. Wash your hands and face before eating

Clean hands and a tidy face prevent the spread of germs and show respect for the food and people you’re dining with. Make it a routine to wash up before setting the table.

2. Place the napkin on your lap

Teach children to put their napkin on their lap as soon as they sit down. The napkin stays there until they’re finished eating and can be used to dab the corners of the mouth.

3. Wait for everyone before starting

It’s polite to wait until everyone is served before taking the first bite. Encourage kids to look around and make sure all diners are ready before beginning.

4. Chew with your mouth closed and use polite words

Remind children to chew quietly and avoid talking with food in their mouths. If they need something, they should say “Please pass the…” or “May I have…” rather than reaching across the table.

5. Ask to be excused and thank the cook

When they are finished eating, children should ask politely to leave the table. Before they go, they should thank the person who prepared the meal and offer to help clear the dishes. Ending the meal with gratitude reinforces respect for the cook and others at the table.
